The termite species Odontotermes obesus, known for cultivating fungi called Termitomyces within their mounds, has revealed surprising agricultural skills. These industrious insects gather dead leaves, wood, and grass, creating underground gardens known as combs, where the fungi decompose tough plant fibers, enabling the termites to access essential nutrients in a remarkable display of symbiotic agriculture. However, like any farmer, termites face challenges from weeds. Rhitoban Raychoudhury, a professor of biological sciences at the Indian Institute of Science Education, notes that earlier studies suggested termites had a rigid response to weed infestations. Contrary to this belief, Raychoudhury's recent research published in Science indicates that termites employ sophisticated, adaptable gardening techniques. Despite being nearly blind due to their subterranean lifestyle, termites compensate with heightened senses. "They rely on advanced olfactory reception and touch to navigate their environment and identify weeds in their gardens," Raychoudhury explains. To investigate how termites respond to weed threats, his team conducted experiments using Odontotermes obesus, presenting them with various gardening challenges. In their experimental setup, the researchers placed autoclaved soil from termite mounds into glass Petri dishes. Each dish contained two fungus combs: one served as a control, featuring fresh, uninfected Termitomyces, while the other was deliberately contaminated with Pseudoxylaria, a fungal weed that frequently invades Termitomyces habitats in termite colonies. This setup allowed the scientists to observe how termites adapted their gardening tactics in the face of weed infestation.
