Teradar reveals its first terahertz-band vision sensor for cars

Boston-based Teradar has made headlines at the Consumer Electronics Show 2026, unveiling its inaugural terahertz sensor named Summit. This innovative sensor is touted as the first of its kind to offer long-range, high-resolution capabilities, specifically engineered to perform exceptionally in various weather conditions. Teradar aims to fill the significant gap left by traditional radar and lidar technologies. The company is eyeing a shipping date of 2028, contingent upon securing contracts with automakers. If successful, the Summit sensor could pave the way for significant advancements in vehicle autonomy, potentially enabling either partial or full self-driving features across different car models. Teradar’s approach centers around harnessing the largely untapped terahertz band of the electromagnetic spectrum, which lies between microwaves and infrared. Notably, the Summit is a solid-state sensor, devoid of any moving parts, combining the best characteristics of existing lidar and radar systems while minimizing their limitations. This feature could make it an appealing option for automakers hesitant about the high costs associated with lidar or the restrictions of radar technologies. The company is reportedly collaborating with five leading automakers from the U.S. and Europe, along with three Tier 1 suppliers, to validate its technology. This launch comes at a critical juncture for automotive sensor providers, particularly following the recent bankruptcy filing of U.S. lidar company Luminar. The collapse was attributed to faltering contracts with major car manufacturers like Volvo and Mercedes-Benz, who have been wary due to competition from lower-cost alternatives in China. Despite these challenges, the demand for lidar remains robust in the Chinese automotive sector, with companies like Hesai announcing the production of over 1 million lidar sensors in 2025. Other U.S. firms in the sector, such as Ouster, have shifted their focus towards diversified applications in robotics and smart infrastructure following significant industry consolidation. Teradar's ambitions extend beyond automotive applications, as evidenced by its recent $150 million Series B funding round, which included investments from Lockheed Martin’s venture arm and VXI Capital, a new fund with a defense-oriented focus. While lidar technology is still relevant—exemplified by Rivian’s recent decision to incorporate a lidar sensor in its upcoming R2 SUV—Teradar CEO Matt Carey remains optimistic about the future of his terahertz sensor. "Our main job is to ensure our sensor becomes standard across all automobiles, and we are committed to pursuing whatever path is necessary to achieve that goal," he stated.
