The Silicon Valley congressional race is getting ugly

As the primary approaches in early June, the race for California's 17th district is heating up between incumbent Ro Khanna and tech entrepreneur Ethan Agarwal. The rivalry has intensified following Agarwal's entry into the contest in March, bolstered by influential tech billionaires who oppose Khanna's endorsement of a proposed tax targeting billionaires in the state. Agarwal has taken aim at Khanna's record, particularly scrutinizing his stock transactions during his tenure in office. Meanwhile, the narrative has taken a dramatic turn with the emergence of anonymous packages sent to news outlets, containing digital court documents that expose Agarwal's legal troubles. Among the revelations, a significant $683,000 judgment against Agarwal is highlighted, stemming from a $2 million copyright settlement with Universal Music Group. This case accused his fitness app, Aaptiv, of unauthorized use of its music tracks. Additionally, Agarwal faces a nearly $2 million lawsuit from a landlord related to Aaptiv's office lease at One World Trade Center, which was abandoned during the pandemic, although this suit has since been dismissed. Another legal challenge involved a 2019 federal lawsuit alleging that adult content was downloaded from Agarwal's IP address, initiated by Malibu Media—a company known for filing numerous similar lawsuits across the nation. Despite the controversies, Agarwal has chosen to be transparent about his past. He addressed a recent article from the New York Post, which labeled him as a candidate with a history of legal issues, by sharing it on social media and acknowledging his imperfections as a candidate. Support from well-known investors like Chamath Palihapitiya has emerged, with Palihapitiya hinting at the growing concern from Khanna’s camp as the opposition research begins to surface. This unfolding drama sets the stage for a contentious race in the coming weeks.
