In a rural community in northwestern Illinois, tensions have escalated following the arrest of a local protester opposed to a proposed data center. Harley Delander, a resident of Dixon, was taken into custody after allegedly threatening Tom Demmer, a former state representative now leading efforts to attract data center operations to the area. The controversy centers around a 400-acre site being marketed as a prime opportunity for data center development by the Lee County Industrial Development Association (LCIDA), with Demmer serving as the organization's president. Delander's arrest occurred outside his home after he reportedly made disturbing statements regarding Demmer's safety. A TikTok video shared by Delander has since gone viral, amassing over 250,000 views and drawing considerable public support for his cause. According to the Dixon Police Department, Delander faces felony charges of intimidation and stalking. Authorities claim he communicated threats and engaged in behavior that raised concerns for Demmer and his family’s safety. In an interview, Delander revealed his intent to stage a protest near Demmer's residence, citing public information regarding the former lawmaker's address. He also mentioned sending an email urging Demmer to step down from his position, which included a warning he described as a figure of speech. As the case unfolds, Delander’s attorney, James Mertes, highlighted the potential First Amendment implications, suggesting that such disputes may become more common as the demand for data centers increases amid the AI surge. The broader conflict reflects growing unease among communities facing the prospect of data centers, with residents voicing concerns over utility costs, environmental impacts, and noise. While supporters of data centers advocate for their economic benefits and efficiency, opposition is mounting in various locations. For instance, a recent proposal in New Hampshire was withdrawn following significant community backlash, and in Utah, protests have led to new regulatory measures for data center developments. As these facilities continue to proliferate, the clash between developers and local citizens is likely to intensify, raising questions about the future of technology infrastructure in small towns across the country.
