Speaker Johnson says China is straining U.S. relations with Nvidia chip ban

On Wednesday, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson labeled China as an "adversary" of the United States following alarming news that Chinese authorities have instructed domestic tech firms to cease purchases of Nvidia's advanced artificial intelligence chips. According to a report by the Financial Times, the Cyberspace Administration of China has mandated that companies stop acquiring the RTX Pro 6000D chip, specifically developed for the Chinese market. In light of these developments, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang expressed his disappointment during a press conference, stating, "We can only serve a market if a country allows us to." He added that the U.S. and China have broader issues to resolve that go beyond this chip ban. This comes on the heels of an agreement brokered last month between the White House, Nvidia, and competitor Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), allowing these companies to resume certain chip sales to China. Under the terms of this arrangement, both Nvidia and AMD are required to contribute 15% of their sales to the U.S. government. As this situation unfolds, stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
