A Springfield, Tennessee resident, Nicholas Moore, is poised to enter a guilty plea for repeatedly breaching the electronic filing system of the U.S. Supreme Court. According to prosecutors, from August to October 2023, the 24-year-old allegedly accessed the protected computer system without authorization on 25 separate occasions, acquiring sensitive information in the process. The specific details regarding the nature of the accessed information or the methods used for the intrusion remain undisclosed. Moore's guilty plea is scheduled to be conducted via video link on Friday. A representative from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, which is handling the case, indicated that no further details beyond what has already been publicly released can be shared. Attempts to obtain additional comments from the U.S. Department of Justice were not immediately successful, and Moore’s attorney, Eugene Ohm, has not responded to inquiries. This incident is part of a concerning trend, as hackers have increasingly targeted U.S. court systems in recent years. In response to such threats, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts announced in August that it had reinforced its cybersecurity measures following a cyberattack attributed to Russian government-affiliated hackers. The case has garnered attention from Court Watch researcher Seamus Hughes, who monitors court documentation. As the legal proceedings unfold, more information may emerge about this breach and similar incidents in the realm of cybersecurity.
