As Pavel Durov marks his 41st birthday, the CEO of Telegram is voicing serious concerns about the future of the internet. He warns that the platform, once a beacon for free information exchange, is at risk of transforming into a comprehensive instrument of control. In a poignant post on X (previously known as Twitter), Durov highlighted the alarming trends in various countries including the UK, Australia, Germany, and the European Union. He expressed his discontent, stating, "I’m turning 41, but I don’t feel like celebrating. Our generation is running out of time to save the free Internet built for us by our fathers. What was once the promise of the free exchange of information is being turned into the ultimate tool of control." Durov painted a grim picture of a rapidly approaching dystopia, warning that the current generation may be the last to experience true freedoms. He pointed to the controversial Malicious Communications Act in the UK, which has led to arrests for social media posts deemed annoying or inconvenient, as well as Germany's laws on hate speech and defamation that have targeted activists and journalists for seemingly minor infractions. The Telegram founder's worries are compounded by his own brush with the law; last year, he was detained by French authorities for alleged violations related to the platform's role in facilitating illegal activities. The accusations stem from claims that Telegram's minimal moderation, encrypted messaging, and the use of disposable numbers and cryptocurrency have contributed to various criminal enterprises. Durov's message is one of urgency, suggesting that society is on a perilous trajectory. He stated, "By betraying the legacy of our ancestors, we’ve set ourselves on a path toward self-destruction — moral, intellectual, economic, and ultimately biological. So no, I’m not going to celebrate today. I’m running out of time. WE are running out of time." In a notable turn, Elon Musk, the owner of xAI, retweeted Durov's message, although he refrained from commenting on the specific issues raised. Musk has previously criticized the UK government's actions against social media users and has also spoken out against Durov's arrest in France, labeling it as an example of government overreach.
