In rare chickenpox case, itchy blisters mushroom into large, rubbery nodules

For many, childhood chickenpox is just a painful memory of itching and discomfort. However, for a 15-year-old girl in Nepal, the aftermath of this common illness has become a nightmare. After her chickenpox symptoms subsided, she faced an unexpected and distressing complication: large, painful keloids emerging from her previous scars. Keloids are abnormal skin growths that occur during the healing process when the body produces too much collagen. In this case, the girl's chickenpox scars, which should have healed normally, instead developed into firm, rubbery nodules. The largest of these growths, located on her chest, measured approximately 4 by 4 cm (about 1.6 by 1.6 inches). These nodules not only caused her discomfort but also left her with significant and permanent skin alterations. The teenager experienced five separate keloids appearing simultaneously on various parts of her body, including her right jaw, chest, abdomen, and flank. This rare occurrence is classified as “eruptive keloids,” a phenomenon that has only been documented in five other cases in medical literature until now. Her case has been highlighted in the journal Clinical Case Reports, marking it as a significant addition to the understanding of post-chickenpox complications. Prior to the emergence of these keloids, the girl was treated for her chickenpox infection with the antiviral medication acyclovir and had recovered well. The exact reasons for the eruption of keloids remain unclear, leaving medical professionals puzzled about why some individuals experience this reaction while others do not. This case serves as a reminder of the complexities of skin healing and the unexpected challenges that can arise following common childhood illnesses.
