Man whose parents were kidnapped after $245M Bitcoin theft has pleaded guilty to federal charges

A 19-year-old from Connecticut has admitted guilt in a major cryptocurrency theft that led to his parents being kidnapped. Veer Chetal, from Danbury, entered a guilty plea to charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering, agreeing to testify against his accomplices as part of a federal investigation. Chetal, along with two others, was implicated in the theft of 4,100 Bitcoins valued at approximately $245 million from a victim in Washington, D.C. The trio reportedly indulged in a lavish lifestyle post-heist, spending substantial sums on luxury cars, jewelry, and upscale rentals. The situation took a dangerous turn when Chetal's parents were assaulted and briefly kidnapped in Danbury, with the assailants believing that their son possessed a fortune in cryptocurrency. This incident occurred merely a week after the Bitcoin theft, highlighting the violent lengths to which some will go to exploit the cryptocurrency boom. Court documents revealed that Chetal pled guilty in November and is now cooperating with federal authorities. Investigators uncovered potential links to nearly 50 additional thefts, yielding another $3 million in illicit gains between late 2023 and mid-2024. One of Chetal's co-defendants, Malone Lam, was also indicted for his involvement in a broader online scheme that raked in over $260 million in cryptocurrency thefts. Chetal faces a prison sentence ranging from 19 to 24 years, alongside fines between $50,000 and $500,000, with further restitution to be determined. His legal representative has refrained from commenting on the ongoing case. In a related raid, federal agents seized over $500,000 in cash, high-end jewelry, and luxury clothing from Chetal’s residence and his parents' home. They also discovered that he had handed over $39 million worth of cryptocurrency to investigators. The criminal activities of Chetal and his associates involved sophisticated online scams, including impersonating major tech companies to gain access to victims’ crypto accounts. The dangerous trend of violent crimes targeting cryptocurrency holders is on the rise, as evidenced by the broad daylight kidnapping of Chetal's parents, which was thwarted due to quick police response and the presence of an off-duty FBI agent. Originally from India, Chetal emigrated to the U.S. in 2010. His father, a former employee at Morgan Stanley, has reportedly lost his job due to the fallout from the kidnapping incident. With his legal troubles potentially leading to deportation, Chetal's future remains uncertain as he awaits sentencing.
