Teen founders raise $6M to reinvent pesticides using AI — and convince Paul Graham to join in

In a remarkable venture, two young entrepreneurs approached Paul Graham, co-founder of Y Combinator, with a transformative idea: an AI-driven model aimed at creating innovative pesticides. Their pitch not only captured Graham's interest but also led to the formation of their startup, Bindwell, which has successfully raised $6 million in a seed funding round, co-led by General Catalyst and A Capital, with Graham investing personally. Unlike conventional agrochemical companies that tend to rely on legacy products, Bindwell's strategy focuses on developing its own pesticide molecules using advanced AI models. This fresh approach seeks to modernize an industry that has been largely stagnant, even as pesticide usage in agriculture has soared in the past thirty years. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, up to 40% of crop production is lost annually due to pests and diseases, highlighting the urgent need for effective pest control solutions. As pests adapt and develop resistance, farmers are compelled to use greater quantities of chemicals to sustain yield levels, creating a detrimental cycle that harms ecosystems. Bindwell aims to disrupt this pattern by employing AI to discover entirely new, targeted pesticide molecules crafted specifically for contemporary agricultural challenges. Founded in 2024 by Tyler Rose, 18, and Navvye Anand, 19, Bindwell emerged from their research at the Wolfram Summer Research Program, where they adapted drug discovery AI techniques for pesticide development. Their initial focus was a model called PLAPT, which was recognized in a scientific paper on cancer treatments. The duo's personal experiences with farming—Rose through his aunt's farm in China and Anand through his family's farmland in Delhi—fueled their determination to tackle pest control issues head-on. Initially, the founders planned to sell AI-driven tools to agrochemical companies but encountered resistance from an industry slow to embrace AI technology. A pivotal conversation with Graham led to a strategic pivot: instead of selling AI tools, Bindwell would utilize its models to create new pesticide molecules directly. Graham expressed confidence in the founders, stating, "They’re smart and have a good idea." Bindwell has developed its own suite of AI tools designed to minimize errors—a common issue in AI outputs. This includes Foldwell, a model for predicting protein structures, and PLAPT, which can evaluate all known synthesized compounds within six hours. Their approach allows for the analysis of billions of molecules, significantly speeding up pesticide discovery compared to traditional methods. Currently, Bindwell is validating its AI-generated molecules in a lab in San Carlos and is in discussions with global agrochemical companies for potential partnerships. The startup is also planning field tests in India and China, aiming to finalize licensing deals within the coming year. With a small team, Bindwell is poised to make a significant impact in the agricultural sector by addressing the pressing need for innovative pest control solutions.
