Australias social media ban leaves a 15-year-old worried about losing touch with friends

In a groundbreaking move, Australia is set to enforce a social media ban that has left many teenagers, including 15-year-old Riley Allen, concerned about losing connections with friends. Riley, who resides on a sheep ranch in the Outback, worries about staying in touch with peers scattered across distances of up to 70 kilometers (43 miles) as the law comes into effect. Starting Wednesday, youth under the age of 16 will no longer be permitted to maintain accounts on popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others. Offending platforms could face hefty fines, reaching up to 49.5 million Australian dollars (approximately $32.9 million), if they fail to comply. Riley, who has accounts on several restricted platforms, has already been prompted to verify his age but has not yet been removed from any. Riley’s mother, Sonia Allen, a schoolteacher, has made it clear that she will not assist him in circumventing the ban, though she acknowledges that other parents might. She believes that while the law should be adhered to, there are still ways for parents to regulate their children's social media activity effectively. Having previously limited Riley's social media use due to late-night distractions, she has seen the benefits of responsible usage. As Riley approaches his 16th birthday in April, he recognizes the ban's intentions but advocates for alternative measures, such as a curfew on social media use to mitigate potential harm. In Sydney, a fellow teenager, Noah Jones, is also voicing concerns. He, along with a classmate, is challenging the legality of the ban in the High Court, arguing that it infringes upon the rights of 2.6 million young Australians by restricting their freedom of communication. The government stands firm, citing parental support for actions against social media risks. A parents' group that campaigned for the age restriction believes that a universal ban ensures that everyone is affected equally, thereby leveling the playing field. However, critics, including academics and youth advocates, warn that the ban may lead to unintended consequences, pushing young users towards less regulated platforms. Noah argues that this could ultimately silence their voices and cut them off from vital information and communication. The case is set for a directions hearing in late February, and while there were discussions about seeking an injunction to delay the ban, legal advice deterred that action. Advocates like John Ruddick from the Digital Freedom Project believe that children will find ways around the restrictions, potentially leading to more significant risks without parental oversight. He emphasizes the importance of open dialogue and parental involvement in monitoring social media use, rather than pushing it underground.
