Tech giants pour billions into Anthropic as circular AI investments roll on

In a groundbreaking move, Microsoft and Nvidia have unveiled plans to invest significantly in Anthropic, a prominent player in the AI landscape. The partnership features a staggering $30 billion commitment from Anthropic to leverage Microsoft’s cloud services. As part of this strategic alliance, Nvidia will contribute up to $10 billion, while Microsoft’s investment is set at $5 billion, with both tech giants participating in Anthropic’s upcoming funding round. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment, as it aligns two companies known for their support of OpenAI, while also positioning them closer to a formidable competitor in the AI space—Anthropic. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with OpenAI, stating in a recent video that, although they will increasingly act as mutual customers, OpenAI continues to be a vital partner. "We will use Anthropic models, and they will utilize our infrastructure, allowing us to bring solutions to market together," Nadella explained. This strategic investment comes on the heels of OpenAI's recent restructuring, which has distanced the organization from its non-profit roots. OpenAI has also entered into a $38 billion agreement to secure cloud services from Amazon, signaling a shift toward greater independence from Microsoft. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed ambitious plans for the future, aiming to allocate $1.4 trillion to develop 30 gigawatts of computing power, underscoring the fierce competition in the AI sector.
