Tech giants commit billions to Indian AI as New Delhi pushes for superpower status

In a remarkable show of commitment, leading technology companies are set to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into India's burgeoning AI sector. This announcement coincided with a significant summit in the country that convened global leaders and AI executives, highlighting the intense competition to advance AI technology worldwide. Major players such as Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet have disclosed plans for capital expenditures that could total up to $700 billion this year alone. Indian tech giant Reliance has revealed intentions to invest $110 billion into data centers and infrastructure, while fellow Indian conglomerate Adani is planning a massive $100 billion expansion in AI data centers over the next decade. U.S. tech firms also made headlines during the summit. Microsoft announced its goal to invest $50 billion in AI initiatives throughout the Global South by 2030. Additionally, OpenAI and chip manufacturer AMD have formed partnerships with Tata Group to enhance AI capabilities, and Blackstone, a U.S. asset manager, participated in a $600 million equity raise for Indian AI infrastructure firm Neysa. The summit wasn't without its controversies. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates faced backlash and withdrew from the event due to criticism over his past ties with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Furthermore, an Indian university attracted scrutiny for claiming to have developed a commercially available robot dog manufactured in China. As India strives to elevate its status as a leading tech power, it has greenlit $18 billion in chip projects to strengthen its local supply chain. The recent gathering also marked significant progress toward a trade agreement between the U.S. and India, aimed at lowering tariffs and enhancing economic collaboration. During the summit, representatives from both nations signed the Pax Silica agreement, a U.S.-initiated effort to secure the global supply chain for silicon-based technologies. The event featured prominent industry leaders, including OpenAI's Sam Altman, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis. Nvidia, a leading chip manufacturer, announced plans to expand partnerships with venture capital firms in India, signaling its intent to tap into the nation's promising tech ecosystem. Despite a burgeoning public market, private capital investment remains limited, as noted by Anirudh Suri of the India Internet Fund. He highlighted a lack of venture capital and private equity investments in Indian AI startups. While some observers argue that India is lagging behind the U.S. and China in AI development, Microsoft President Brad Smith expressed optimism about India's engineering talent, suggesting that the country could become a significant player in developing AI models. He mentioned that various 'DeepSeek moments' are expected to emerge from India, alongside other nations like China. Nevertheless, some experts caution that India's efforts to boost its AI sector are not enough. Udith Sikand, a senior analyst at Gavekal, remarked that while India is making bold moves to jumpstart its AI initiatives, it must address fundamental challenges that hinder business operations in the country.
