Mag 7 value shrinks by $2.3 trillion amid AI spending jitters — but investors back chipmakers

In a staggering development, the combined market value of the Magnificent 7 has plummeted by $2.3 trillion this month, as investors express growing concerns over the massive infrastructure expenditures of these tech giants. The Magnificent 7, comprising Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, Apple, Meta, Tesla, and Amazon, has seen its index drop by 10% in June alone. These leading companies are heavily investing in chips and data center construction to support their artificial intelligence initiatives, with expenditures totaling hundreds of billions of dollars. Much of this spending is being financed through debt, raising questions among investors about the potential returns. With the second quarter earnings season looming next month, stakeholders are anxiously awaiting indicators of success. Dan Ives, managing director at Wedbush Securities, noted that the next few weeks will be critical for tech investors, as they anticipate validation of the AI-driven growth narrative. "We are entering a pivotal earnings season that will shape perceptions of the ongoing tech buildout," he remarked in a recent analysis. As the situation unfolds, some companies within the Magnificent 7 are feeling the pinch more than others. Microsoft has experienced a 20% decline in June, while Nvidia is down about 13%. Apple and Amazon are also down roughly 8%. According to Tom Lee from Fundstrat Global Advisors, the market is grappling with a new narrative as these companies transition from asset-light operations to ones that require substantial balance sheet investments. Despite challenges for some tech stocks, semiconductor companies are thriving. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which includes major players like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Micron, and ASML, has gained approximately 6% this month and boasts a remarkable 90% increase this year. The spending spree by major tech firms has led to a semiconductor shortage, benefiting the entire supply chain, including suppliers and manufacturers. Notably, memory component prices have surged due to supply constraints, with the Roundhill Memory ETF, which tracks memory stocks, skyrocketing 166% this year. While uncertainty looms over parts of the tech sector, recent robust earnings from Micron have bolstered confidence in the AI narrative. Duncan Toms, a strategist at HSBC, emphasized that these earnings provide compelling evidence of a vibrant AI market. Analysts from UBS echoed this sentiment, predicting continued growth in cloud revenues and affirming that AI-related stocks will remain crucial for long-term market performance. They also emphasized the importance of diversification within and beyond the AI sector to navigate the evolving landscape.
