Alphabet pops, Meta tanks as each company raises capex spend

Alphabet's stock experienced a remarkable increase of over 6% on Thursday, contrasting sharply with a 9% drop in Meta's shares. This disparity followed the release of first-quarter earnings, which highlighted both companies' intentions to significantly enhance their spending on artificial intelligence. Investors are reacting differently to these plans, revealing a complex landscape where not every tech firm's AI investment is met with enthusiasm. According to Matt Britzman, an analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, the mixed reactions from the market underscore the ongoing struggle to balance the immense potential of AI against the substantial capital needed to pursue it. He noted in his Thursday research that the current cycle of AI investment is far from winding down. Alphabet outperformed analysts' projections for its first-quarter revenue, buoyed by its thriving Google Cloud division, which reported an impressive 63% revenue growth year-over-year. CEO Sundar Pichai attributed this surge to rising demand for the company’s enterprise AI solutions. Consequently, Alphabet has adjusted its capital expenditure forecast for the year to between $180 billion and $190 billion, an increase from the previous $175 billion to $185 billion range. In contrast, Meta did exceed Wall Street expectations for both earnings and revenue in the first quarter. However, the company reported a decline in daily active users, impacting its performance due to "internet disruptions in Iran." Meta has also raised its capital expenditure plans to a range of $125 billion to $145 billion, up from its earlier forecast of $115 billion to $135 billion. This adjustment reflects anticipated increases in component prices and additional data center costs to accommodate future growth. During an investor call, Pichai emphasized the substantial demand for AI tools and custom chips, describing how AI is permeating every aspect of Alphabet's business. Meanwhile, Meta's executives defended the company’s significant AI investment, asserting that it is essential for meeting infrastructure needs and driving future growth, particularly in its core online advertising sector. Unlike Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon—who benefit from extensive cloud infrastructure that facilitates revenue generation from their AI investments—Meta lacks such a framework, making it challenging to demonstrate potential returns on its spending. Microsoft announced an increased capital spending forecast of $190 billion for 2026, with $25 billion attributed to rising component costs. Amazon maintained its previously set capex budget of $200 billion, the highest among its tech peers. Concerns regarding Meta's AI expenditures prompted JPMorgan analysts to downgrade the company's stock from overweight to neutral, expressing skepticism about the challenging path to profitability given the heavy capex forecast. The analysts suggested that clarity on the return on AI investments beyond the core advertising business may take time, as Meta navigates its strategy in a competitive landscape where tech giants continue to integrate enterprise solutions effectively.
