Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei fires back at Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's criticism, calling it a 'bad faith distortion'

A heated exchange is unfolding between two prominent figures in the AI industry, as Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei counters criticism from Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang. The friction began when Huang publicly disagreed with Amodei's views, stating he found himself at odds with 'almost everything' Amodei had said. During a recent episode of the 'Big Technology' podcast, host Alex Kantrowitz brought up Huang's comments, highlighting Huang's assertion that Amodei believes he should be the sole architect of safe AI, thereby seeking to dominate the industry. Amodei vehemently refuted this characterization, labeling it as 'the most outrageous lie' he has ever encountered. Huang's original claim suggested that Amodei thinks AI is so perilous that only his company should develop it. At the VivaTech Conference earlier this year, Huang criticized Amodei's perspective on AI potentially leading to massive job losses, arguing that such a viewpoint implies a need for exclusivity in AI development. Amodei, however, expressed confusion over how Huang arrived at that interpretation of his statements, insisting that his stance is about promoting a 'race to the top' in AI safety. Amodei explained that a 'race to the bottom' occurs when companies rush to release features without prioritizing safety, ultimately harming everyone involved. In contrast, he advocates for an approach where the safest and most ethical AI practices set industry standards, benefiting all. In response to Amodei's comments, an Nvidia spokesperson stated that the company champions 'safe, responsible, and transparent AI.' They argued that regulatory actions that hinder open-source development could stifle innovation and compromise AI safety, dismissing Amodei's vision of a regulatory 'race to the top' as counterproductive. Recently, Anthropic had urged the U.S. government to implement testing protocols for AI models, citing national security concerns. Amodei also voiced his opposition to a regulatory freeze, advocating for collaborative efforts from Congress and the White House to establish transparency standards for the industry. He highlighted Anthropic's own initiatives in promoting responsible AI development, pointing out that their interpretability research is made publicly available. As the debate intensifies, Amodei firmly rejected Huang's insinuation that he is leveraging safety concerns for competitive advantage, stating, 'I've said nothing that even remotely resembles the idea that this company should be the only one to build the technology.' He concluded by emphasizing that Huang's comments represent a significant misrepresentation of his intentions.
