Tech layoffs 2026: Over 71,000 jobs gone as companies double down on AI

The global technology landscape is undergoing a drastic transformation, as the first quarter of 2026 has seen layoffs exceed 71,447 positions. This alarming trend underscores a significant shift as companies increasingly focus on artificial intelligence (AI) while simultaneously tightening their financial belts. Over 80 firms have announced workforce reductions this year, driven by a reevaluation of operational strategies amid soaring investments in AI capabilities and mounting pressure to enhance profit margins. Notably, Oracle has made headlines by laying off approximately 30,000 employees worldwide, with around 12,000 affected in India alone. This drastic measure is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing expenses by as much as $1 billion. In communications with impacted workers, Oracle indicated that the layoffs were part of a strategic organizational restructuring, specifying that the notification date would also mark the last working day for those affected. This announcement coincided with the appointment of Hilary Maxson as the new Chief Financial Officer, who is set to receive a base salary of $950,000 along with a performance-based bonus target of $2.5 million. Amazon.com Inc., earlier this year, disclosed plans to eliminate about 16,000 jobs across its cloud, retail, and advertising sectors, in addition to cutting nearly 100 positions within its robotics division. Meanwhile, Atlassian Corp. revealed on March 12 its decision to reduce its workforce by 10%, impacting around 1,600 employees as part of its shift towards prioritizing AI and enterprise growth. Similarly, fintech company Block Inc., co-founded by Jack Dorsey, announced it would be cutting approximately 4,000 roles to enhance productivity through AI integration. Additionally, Ericsson is set to lay off about 1,600 workers in Sweden as part of its cost-reduction strategies. The layoffs have been widespread, affecting various sectors. Meta Platforms trimmed its workforce by about 1,500 roles in January, while semiconductor equipment maker ASML reduced its headcount by around 1,700. In India, Flipkart Internet has also asked about 300 employees to leave during its annual performance review cycle. Furthermore, Livspace, a home interiors startup based in Bengaluru, has laid off roughly 1,000 employees, representing nearly 12% of its workforce, as it pivots towards becoming an 'AI-native' organization.
