Anthropic, Apple, OpenAI CEOs condemn ICE violence, praise Trump

In a recent segment on NBC News, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, voiced his concerns regarding the recent violent actions of Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis. He highlighted the necessity of safeguarding democratic values within the United States, emphasizing that Anthropic does not engage in contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Amodei expressed his belief in empowering democracies to protect themselves against authoritarianism, stating, "We need to defend our own democratic values at home." His remarks come in the wake of public outrage following the tragic deaths of two U.S. citizens at the hands of Border Patrol agents. Simultaneously, a leaked internal message from OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, criticized ICE's actions, declaring, "What’s happening with ICE is going too far." Altman distinguished between necessary deportations of violent criminals and the broader actions being taken, urging for a clear differentiation. Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, also shared his sorrow over the events in a leaked email to employees, where he called the situation in Minneapolis heartbreaking. Employees from both tech giants have been urging their leaders to vocally oppose ICE's operations in U.S. cities, especially following the recent violence. In a collective open letter, tech workers have demanded that their CEOs cancel any existing contracts with ICE and take a strong public stance against the agency's use of force. The organizing group behind this letter, known as ICEout.tech, expressed appreciation for the condemnations from Amodei and Altman but called for further actions from other industry leaders who have remained silent. Interestingly, both Amodei and Altman included praise for former President Trump in their statements. Cook noted a productive conversation he had with Trump, while Amodei commended Trump’s inclination to facilitate an independent investigation into the shootings. This has sparked frustration among employees at Apple, particularly as Cook attended a screening of a documentary about Melania Trump shortly after the tragic events. Amodei’s sister, Daniela, who is also the president of Anthropic, shared her own distress over the events in Minnesota on LinkedIn, asserting that the occurrences do not reflect American values. Altman, meanwhile, expressed hope that Trump would unify the country in light of these challenges. As discussions continue, observers note that the AI industry has experienced significant growth, partly attributed to the favorable policies of the Trump administration. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have seen substantial financial boosts, raising billions in funding over the past year. Yet, Altman’s current supportive stance towards Trump marks a stark contrast to his previous criticisms of the former president. The evolving situation raises questions about the accountability of these tech leaders and their responses to government actions that impact their communities. As of now, both Anthropic and OpenAI have confirmed they do not hold contracts with ICE, while requests for comments from Apple are still pending.
