In recent years, artificial intelligence has stirred up significant discussion regarding its impact on the job market. While some fear it may lead to job losses, others are harnessing its power to enhance their job search efforts. A notable example is Amar Saurabh, a former product manager at Meta and TikTok, who utilized ChatGPT to secure interviews with top-tier companies, ultimately accepting a position at PayPal. In a detailed account shared with Business Insider, Saurabh described how he developed a customized version of ChatGPT in under two hours, which substantially improved his job search results, leading to a lead product manager role at PayPal. Saurabh holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer and Information Sciences from B.M.S. College of Engineering in Bengaluru and completed a Master of Science in Product Management at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Following five years in roles at Meta and TikTok, Saurabh sought a more stable opportunity in the U.S. He began applying for jobs in April but only managed to secure two or three interviews in the initial months. This prompted him to create a tailored GPT to assist with his job search. Initially relying on the standard version of ChatGPT, Saurabh found it challenging to obtain personalized responses, often receiving generic replies or being asked to resubmit his résumé. Recognizing that his varied use of ChatGPT for different tasks led to inconsistent results, he shifted to a custom version tailored for job hunting, aptly named "PM Job Search Advisor." Saurabh opted for a paid subscription costing $20 per month to access enhanced features. He uploaded his résumé and LinkedIn profile, specifying his target for senior-level product management roles. After about an hour and a half of initial setup, the custom GPT proved invaluable, helping him draft personalized LinkedIn requests and identify key contacts at companies, complete with email addresses. Furthermore, the AI refined his résumé for each application, aligning it with job descriptions and optimizing for relevant keywords. Saurabh even used the GPT to prepare for interviews, feeding it job descriptions and interview dates to highlight pertinent experiences and anticipate potential questions, saving him considerable time. While the number of applications he submitted remained the same, the quality of responses dramatically improved. Within just two months, he received invitations for at least seven interviews from notable firms like Reddit, Intuit, and PayPal. Despite occasional lapses in the GPT's memory regarding his details, Saurabh likened the experience to conversing with a human and remained optimistic about its utility. Encouraged by the results, Saurabh plans to enhance his custom GPT further, considering features that would allow it to autonomously apply for jobs and respond to application queries. He expressed confidence that he would utilize this AI tool again in future job searches.
