PM Modi’s WFH push gains industry backing as Nasscom says IT firms enabling remote work amid West Asia tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent call for citizens and organizations to embrace work from home (WFH), virtual meetings, and reduced travel has resonated strongly within India's tech sector. On May 11, Nasscom, the prominent industry body, confirmed that IT companies are already facilitating remote and hybrid work arrangements where operationally feasible, aiming to decrease energy consumption and commuting amidst escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. In its statement, Nasscom highlighted that the Indian technology industry continues to operate under well-established hybrid work models. Companies are balancing work-from-home arrangements with office attendance based on specific operational needs and customer requirements. The industry body emphasized that businesses have implemented prudent energy management measures across their facilities in light of the current geopolitical climate. Nasscom noted, "In response to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, companies are optimizing non-essential energy consumption and streamlining certain facility services while enabling remote or hybrid work where appropriate. This approach helps to minimize overall energy usage and commuting." The announcement follows a letter from the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, advocating for a government advisory that mandates WFH for the IT and IT-enabled services (IT/ITES) sector. In their correspondence dated May 11, NITES referenced PM Modi's appeal for reducing unnecessary travel and promoting digital alternatives during this sensitive period. NITES emphasized that this was more than just a recommendation; it was a national call for collective responsibility to alleviate fuel dependency and ease traffic burdens. The employee union asserted that the IT/ITES sector is uniquely capable of transitioning to large-scale remote work without compromising productivity, citing successful adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The letter pointed out that during the pandemic, the Indian IT industry quickly shifted to remote work, maintaining operations and supporting global clients despite unprecedented challenges. NITES argued that requiring daily commutes, despite the availability of digital tools, places unnecessary strain on fuel consumption and public infrastructure. "Employees in major cities often spend hours commuting for tasks that could be accomplished remotely," they stated. "This not only affects their physical and mental health but also leads to significant fuel waste and environmental impact." NITES has called on the Labour Ministry to issue guidelines encouraging IT/ITES firms to implement mandatory work-from-home policies wherever feasible to help alleviate traffic congestion and reduce environmental stress while ensuring economic continuity. NITES President Harpreet Singh Saluja clarified that the intention behind this appeal is to foster national cooperation rather than cause friction with employers. He reiterated that the pandemic demonstrated the IT sector's capability to operate effectively under WFH arrangements. Meanwhile, Nasscom assured that the industry has mature operational frameworks designed to ensure continuity during disruptions. "These measures are part of our broader strategy for operational resilience and sustainability," they stated, adding that they are closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with stakeholders for a coordinated response.
