Meta absent from SF Pride this year, as tech retreats from public support of LGBTQ+

Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has notably refrained from engaging with the LGBTQ+ community in recent times, a stark contrast to his past involvement. Suzanne Ford, the Executive Director of San Francisco Pride, recalls how Zuckerberg personally reached out to ensure Facebook's presence at the iconic event, which has long symbolized advocacy and justice for LGBTQ+ individuals. Back in 2015, Facebook faced backlash for its policy requiring users to register under their legal names, which led to concerns from the LGBTQ+ community about potential harassment. Following community pressure, Facebook revised this policy, prompting Zuckerberg to advocate for the company's participation in SF Pride. However, the relationship between Meta and SF Pride has deteriorated significantly since then. In March, SF Pride officially severed ties with Meta after the company implemented policies that rolled back internal diversity hiring initiatives and relaxed content moderation guidelines. These changes raised alarm among current and former employees, who voiced concerns about increasing online threats to marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ community. Following this split, Ford noted a complete lack of communication from Zuckerberg or anyone at Meta who had previously collaborated with SF Pride. This year, Meta will not be part of the SF Pride festivities, which are set to occur this weekend. The parade theme for 2025 is “Queer Joy is Resistance.” Ford questioned why Zuckerberg, who once championed the cause, now distances himself from such an important event. Meta is not alone in its withdrawal; other major corporations, including Anheuser-Busch, Comcast, Diageo, and Nissan, have also stepped back from sponsoring SF Pride. Ford expressed concern that the tech industry's retreat from supporting LGBTQ+ rights is particularly disheartening, given San Francisco's pivotal role as both a tech hub and the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ movement in the U.S. Despite the withdrawal of several tech sponsors, companies like Apple, Amazon, and Salesforce continue to support SF Pride. However, the overall decline in corporate sponsorship has left SF Pride with a budget shortfall of $180,000 this year. Ford highlighted the noticeable absence of engagement from tech firms that had previously been involved, noting that she hasn’t received invitations to speak to employee resource groups as she had in the past. Ford also expressed hope that OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, will increase his visibility in supporting the LGBTQ+ community. She mentioned her brief encounter with Altman earlier this year to discuss SF Pride, but has not heard back since. While many tech companies have historically showcased their support for Pride Month with colorful messages, this year’s online presence appears muted. The fear of potential backlash from political figures and the legal risks associated with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have led many corporate leaders to adopt a more cautious approach. Ford emphasized that there are still allies within the corporate sector who wish to support the community without drawing attention to themselves. She remains open to dialogue with Zuckerberg and hopes for a future where Meta can align itself with the values of SF Pride. The organization is prepared to make space for potential changes in leadership at Meta that could lead to renewed collaboration in support of LGBTQ+ rights.
