Big Tech joins forces with Linux Foundation to standardize AI agents

In a groundbreaking collaboration, major technology companies are joining forces to bring clarity to the evolving landscape of AI agents. While the concept of AI agents has been at the forefront of discussions, much of the technology remains largely theoretical. However, as these companies strive to transform ideas into reality, they have introduced a suite of tools aimed at guiding the development of generative AI. A coalition of influential players, including Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI, has formed the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) to champion interoperability within this new technological frontier. This initiative seeks to elevate certain technologies, potentially establishing them as the standard for future AI development. The journey toward advancing agentic AI models is fraught with uncertainty, yet the significant investments made by these companies have led to the emergence of several promising tools. The AAIF, functioning under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, is set to oversee the evolution of three pivotal technologies: Model Context Protocol (MCP), Goose, and AGENTS.md. Among these, MCP stands out as the most recognized, having been open-sourced by Anthropic a year ago. Its primary objective is to create standardized connections between AI agents and data sources. Anthropic has likened MCP to a 'USB-C port for AI,' simplifying the integration process with various databases and cloud platforms. Instead of requiring unique connections for each system, MCP enables developers to seamlessly link to any MCP-compliant server. Since its introduction, MCP has gained traction across the AI sector. At Google I/O 2025, the tech giant revealed its commitment to incorporating MCP into its development tools, subsequently integrating MCP servers into numerous products to enhance data accessibility for AI agents. OpenAI also embraced MCP shortly after its launch. The growing implementation of MCP could empower users to tailor their AI experiences. For instance, the newly unveiled Pebble Index 01 ring employs a local large language model (LLM) that acts on voice notes and is compatible with MCP for user customization. While local AI models may not match the capabilities of larger cloud-based counterparts, MCP helps bridge functionality gaps. Vinesh Sukumar, head of AI products at Qualcomm, remarked, 'Many productivity and content tasks can be effectively managed on the edge. With MCP, you can establish connections with multiple cloud service providers to complete complex tasks.'
