In a significant move, Amazon and Meta are gearing up to advocate against the overwhelming dominance of PhonePe and Google Pay within India's burgeoning instant payment landscape. Representatives from a coalition of platforms, including Amazon Pay, WhatsApp, CRED, MobiKwik, and Flipkart's Super.money, are set to convene with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Thursday, as reported by TechCrunch. The NPCI oversees the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's instant payment system, which sees billions of transactions every month. This meeting comes more than a year after India delayed plans to impose a 30% market share cap on UPI applications until December 31, 2026. This postponement has allowed PhonePe and Google Pay to solidify their dominant status, raising alarms among smaller players about their competitive viability. According to NPCI data, PhonePe and Google Pay together accounted for nearly 80% of the 22.6 billion UPI transactions recorded in March. This stark contrast highlights the considerable gap between these giants and their competitors, such as Paytm, Super.money, CRED, Amazon Pay, and MobiKwik. Recently, PhonePe announced that it has surpassed 700 million registered users and 50 million merchants across India, showcasing the extensive reach that smaller rivals find challenging to match. A document reviewed by TechCrunch indicates that the agenda for the meeting includes discussions on user acquisition methods, product design, and monetization strategies within the UPI framework. Among the recommendations are potential restrictions on how leading applications onboard users and utilize contact data. Participants are also expected to advocate for equal access to features like autopay and payment mandates, as well as for incentives and regulatory support to empower emerging competitors. The regulatory body, NPCI, which operates under the supervision of the Reserve Bank of India, faces the daunting task of balancing the need to curb market dominance while ensuring that the services used by millions remain uninterrupted. As of now, it is uncertain whether this meeting will result in any immediate changes, and questions linger about how NPCI might tackle the issue of market concentration.
