OpenAI and Google employees rush to Anthropic’s defense in DOD lawsuit

In a remarkable show of solidarity, more than 30 employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind have come forward to support Anthropic in its legal battle against the U.S. Defense Department. This unified front follows the Pentagon's designation of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, a classification typically reserved for foreign adversaries, as revealed in recent court documents. The amicus brief, which includes signatures from prominent figures such as Google DeepMind’s chief scientist Jeff Dean, condemns the government's action as an arbitrary exercise of authority. The document states, "The government’s designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk was an improper and arbitrary use of power that has serious ramifications for our industry." This controversy erupted after Anthropic declined the DOD's request to utilize its AI technology for mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry. The Pentagon maintains that it should have the liberty to employ AI for any lawful purpose, unhindered by the constraints of private contracts. Notably, the amicus brief was submitted shortly after Anthropic initiated two lawsuits against the DOD and other federal entities. In their filing, the signatories argue that if the Pentagon was dissatisfied with its contractual terms with Anthropic, it could have simply terminated the agreement and sought services from another leading AI provider. Ironically, a contract with OpenAI was finalized just moments after Anthropic received its supply-chain risk designation, leading to protests from many OpenAI employees.
