Meta and Apple face serious questions about child safety and privacy

The spotlight is shining brightly on the child safety practices of major tech companies. In recent legal battles unfolding in California, New Mexico, and West Virginia, both Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple’s CEO Tim Cook are being scrutinized regarding critical issues of privacy, safety, and free expression. This message coincided with Meta's announcement of rolling out default E2EE for personal messages and calls on its platforms, raising alarms about the implications for child safety. During his testimony, Zuckerberg emphasized his commitment to the well-being of minors using Meta’s services, especially when questioned about his communication with Cook. Meanwhile, West Virginia recently filed a lawsuit against Apple, focusing on the company's handling of CSAM on iOS devices and iCloud services. Attorney General John McCuskey argues that Apple's encryption practices hinder law enforcement's ability to combat child exploitation effectively. Lawyers in both cases have pointed out that E2EE could potentially compromise the safety of children by obstructing the detection and reporting of exploitation.
