Recruit Holdings, the Japanese parent company of Indeed and Glassdoor, announced on Friday a significant workforce reduction, laying off approximately 1,300 employees, which constitutes about 6% of their total staff. These cuts will primarily impact operations in the United States, specifically within the research and development, technology, human resources, and sustainability departments of the two job platforms. According to an internal memo reported by Reuters, CEO Hisayuki Idekoba emphasized the necessity for adaptation in a rapidly evolving technological landscape, stating, "AI is changing the world, and we must adapt by ensuring our product delivers truly great experiences for job seekers and employers." The memo also revealed plans for the integration of Glassdoor's operations into Indeed, leading to the departure of Glassdoor’s CEO, Christian Sutherland-Wong, effective October 1. This move reflects a broader trend within the tech industry, as many companies reassess their spending in light of AI advancements and sustainability goals, resulting in job reductions across the sector. Recent announcements indicate that major companies like Microsoft, TikTok, Match, Intel, and Meta are also scaling back their workforces, collectively impacting tens of thousands of employees. As the tech landscape continues to evolve, Indeed and Glassdoor have yet to respond to inquiries for further comment outside of regular business hours.
