In a swift response to a significant hacking campaign, both Apple and Google have issued critical software updates aimed at safeguarding their users. On Wednesday, Google rolled out fixes for several security vulnerabilities in its Chrome browser, highlighting that one of these bugs had been actively exploited by cybercriminals before it could be addressed. In a rare move, Google initially withheld detailed information about the vulnerability. However, by Friday, the company clarified that the flaw was identified by teams from both Apple and Google, specifically their security divisions that focus on monitoring state-sponsored hackers and spyware developers. This collaboration raises concerns that the attack may have links to government-backed hackers. Simultaneously, Apple unveiled security updates for its range of products, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and the Safari browser. The advisory for iPhones and iPads indicated that two vulnerabilities were patched, with Apple acknowledging that they were aware some users had been targeted in what they described as a highly sophisticated attack. This suggests that the exploits may have been used against specific individuals prior to the release of iOS 26. Apple's cautious phrasing typically indicates that they are aware of potential exploitation of their software by advanced hacking methods, often employed by government entities using tools from firms like NSO Group or Paragon Solutions. Currently, both tech giants have not issued further comments regarding the situation.
