Forget salary hikes, this tech CEO says AI investments take priority

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into corporate strategies is reshaping the landscape of employment, particularly when it comes to salary structures. Organizations worldwide are increasingly channeling resources toward AI technologies to enhance operational efficiency. This shift has led to a marked increase in AI-related expenditures, prompting some companies to reconsider their financial commitments to employee compensation. A recent report from Business Insider highlights that Teradata, a prominent cloud software firm, has opted to suspend annual salary increases for its workforce. The decision affects approximately 5,100 employees, who were informed in January that there would be no salary hikes in 2026. Instead, the company plans to allocate those funds towards bolstering its AI initiatives. In an internal memo, CEO Steve McMillan emphasized the necessity of investing in AI talent and resources. He stated, "We will fund this AI investment by reallocating the budget from 2026 annual salary adjustments." While employees will not see traditional pay raises, the memo did note that performance-based bonuses and equity shares would still be available. Long-time employees at Teradata, some of whom have been with the company for over a decade, revealed that the company typically awards annual salary increases ranging from 2% to 4%, although these are not guaranteed. The broader trend among tech companies is to shift resources towards AI, with reports suggesting that even modest AI projects can require significant financial outlays, often running into the tens of thousands of dollars. As organizations race to implement AI solutions, many are grappling with the challenges of escalating costs. This has prompted some to make tough decisions, including hiring freezes, layoffs, and limiting salary increases to maintain funding for AI projects. The pressure is further compounded by recent layoffs across the tech sector, with companies like Meta, Snap, and Cisco citing AI-related reasons for workforce reductions. Notably, Google recently made headlines by selling $80 billion in stock to boost its AI investment. As the competition intensifies in the AI domain, companies find themselves navigating difficult choices, prioritizing technological advancement over traditional employee benefits.
