Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading IT powerhouse in India, is planning to onboard up to 8,900 forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) as part of its strategy to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. This initiative reflects TCS's commitment to expanding its service offerings rather than signaling a downturn in the demand for IT services. The forward-deployed engineers will collaborate closely with clients to facilitate the implementation, customization, and deployment of AI solutions tailored to their specific business needs. Furthermore, TCS is actively seeking to acquire AI firms that can augment its existing capabilities in this rapidly evolving sector. This move comes in response to investor apprehensions regarding the potential for AI to disrupt India’s substantial $315 billion IT services market. Despite these concerns, TCS CEO K. Krithivasan reassured stakeholders, emphasizing that AI is transforming the outsourcing landscape and generating fresh opportunities for companies like TCS. He noted, “What you need is a deep knowledge of the customer environment to make it work. That is where we differentiate ourselves. This has nothing to do with cost arbitrage; it’s fundamentally about the talent pool that we have built.” According to Krithivasan, TCS intends to establish an FDE team comprising approximately 1% to 1.5% of its total workforce. Given the company’s current employee count, this translates to a recruitment goal of around 5,900 to 8,900 engineers specializing in AI. It remains uncertain whether TCS will be hiring new talent or repurposing existing employees for these AI-centric roles. FDEs will serve as crucial assets within TCS, providing on-site support to clients to accelerate AI adoption, tailor AI models to business requirements, integrate AI into current workflows, and address any technical challenges that arise. The demand for skilled engineers capable of implementing AI solutions is surging as businesses increasingly embrace AI technologies. In addition to its hiring plans, TCS is keen on acquiring startups that specialize in AI, data security, and cybersecurity. CFO Samir Seksaria stated, “We are looking at where we can find innovations that will help us enhance our strategic positioning.” This proactive approach positions TCS to compete with industry giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft, all of whom are also on the lookout for AI experts to aid their clients in successful technology deployment.
