India’s TCS gets TPG to fund half of $2B AI data center project

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a prominent player in the Indian IT sector, has secured a significant investment of $1 billion from private equity firm TPG. This funding is part of an expansive $2 billion initiative aimed at establishing a network of gigawatt-scale data centers across India, known as "HyperVault." As the appetite for AI computing resources surges, the need for robust infrastructure is becoming increasingly urgent. India finds itself in a unique position: it generates nearly 20% of the world’s data, yet only possesses around 3% of the global data center capacity. In response, major technology firms and cloud service providers have been pouring billions into expanding their local infrastructures to capitalize on the nation’s rising adoption of AI technologies. The HyperVault project aims to create high-density, liquid-cooled data centers equipped to handle advanced AI workloads throughout essential cloud regions. With the increasing power requirements of GPUs used for AI tasks, traditional data center designs must evolve. However, the implementation of such technology raises concerns about resource management, particularly in water-scarce regions like India. Cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, which are home to much of India's data center activity, are already experiencing water stress. Reports indicate that a single megawatt data center can consume up to 25.5 million liters of water annually for cooling, exacerbating the challenges faced by existing infrastructure. The rapid expansion of AI data centers also poses challenges in terms of power supply and land availability, two critical resources that are becoming harder to secure in densely populated urban areas. Despite these challenges, global tech companies see India as a key frontier for AI infrastructure development. Over the past two years, local and international tech firms have committed more than $32 billion to enhance data center capabilities in India. Notable investments include Microsoft's commitment of $3 billion for cloud and AI infrastructure and Google's plan to invest $15 billion to create a gigawatt-scale AI data center hub in Andhra Pradesh. TCS aims to collaborate with leading hyperscalers and AI firms to design and operate the necessary infrastructure as the project unfolds. The initial phase of HyperVault will target a capacity of approximately 1.2 gigawatts. According to S&P Global, over 95% of the new data center capacity in India over the next five years will come from leased facilities, while the remainder will be driven by hyperscalers establishing dedicated AI infrastructure. TCS and TPG project that by 2030, India's total data center capacity could surpass 10 gigawatts, a significant increase from the current estimate of about 1.5 gigawatts.
