Tata Electronics strikes Intel deal to build India’s chip supply chain

Tata Electronics is embarking on a transformative journey by collaborating with Intel, a leading American chip designer, to bolster India's domestic electronics and semiconductor supply chain. This partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, will explore the manufacturing and packaging of Intel products tailored for local markets at Tata's forthcoming facilities. As part of this groundbreaking alliance, both companies aim to accelerate the development of customized artificial intelligence solutions for personal computers, catering to both consumers and businesses across India. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed that this collaboration is a significant milestone in establishing a robust electronics and semiconductor ecosystem within the country. He emphasized that together with Intel, they intend to enhance technology offerings and seize the burgeoning opportunities presented by the AI sector. Founded in 2020, Tata Electronics is heavily investing in creating India's first dedicated semiconductor foundry, which will focus on manufacturing chips for various industries, including AI, automotive, computing, and data storage. Additionally, the company is in the process of developing new facilities for assembly and testing. Despite its position as one of the largest electronics consumers globally, India has historically struggled with chip design and fabrication capabilities. The Indian government is actively working to change this dynamic as part of its strategy to reduce reliance on imports and secure a larger foothold in the global electronics market, especially as many companies look to shift operations away from China. Under the "India Semiconductor Mission," the government has already approved multiple semiconductor projects, amassing investments exceeding $18 billion. Intel's CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, described the collaboration as a significant opportunity to expand rapidly in one of the fastest-growing computing markets in the world, propelled by increasing demand for PCs and the swift adoption of AI technologies throughout India.
