Tata Electronics, a major tech supplier to Apple and Tesla, confirms data breach

Tata Electronics, an Indian manufacturer specializing in electronics and semiconductors, has confirmed a significant data breach just weeks after its files allegedly surfaced on a hacker forum. This company, which supplies major tech players like Apple and Tesla, reported that over 630GB of data, including more than 204,300 files, had been compromised. A preliminary examination of the leaked files by TechCrunch revealed documents that seemed to contain specifications for Apple suppliers and manufacturing details related to Tesla. However, the verification of the data's authenticity and its completeness remains unconfirmed. Established in 2020, Tata Electronics has quickly become a crucial component in India's initiative to enhance its electronics and semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. With operations spread across India and a workforce exceeding 75,000, the company has formed alliances with global firms including Apple, ASML, Intel, Qualcomm, and Tesla. These collaborations come as manufacturers seek to diversify their supply chains beyond China, positioning India as a viable alternative. Cybersecurity expert Rajshekhar Rajaharia highlighted that the data made available on the hacker forum included private Outlook email exchanges, SAP-related documents, and other files allegedly associated with Tata Electronics' clientele, notably Apple and Tesla. In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Tata Electronics acknowledged the cybersecurity breach, stating the company had detected the issue on its systems a few weeks prior and promptly initiated its response protocols. The spokesperson further reassured that the breach had not disrupted their business operations. However, they refrained from discussing the specifics of the compromised data or whether customers had been informed about the breach. Reports indicated that Tata Electronics had notified some employees involved in iPhone assembly regarding the data breach last week. Additionally, it has been suggested that Apple is investigating the situation and that a ransom demand has been issued to Tata Electronics. This incident emerges as Tata Group strengthens its presence in global technology supply chains, having ventured into iPhone manufacturing in 2023 by acquiring the Indian operations of Wistron, a former Apple supplier. Subsequently, Tata Electronics secured a 60% stake in the Indian division of Pegatron, another significant manufacturing partner for Apple. Moreover, Tata has recently entered into a semiconductor supply agreement with Tesla, underscoring its expanding ties with some of the biggest names in technology. As of now, Apple and Tesla have not provided comments regarding the breach.
