Target's tech chief says AI isn't replacing workers as the company looks to mount a comeback

In a climate where AI is reshaping corporate landscapes globally, Target's technology chief, Prat Vemana, asserts that the retailer's tech workforce remains irreplaceable by chatbots. Speaking to Business Insider following the launch of a comprehensive turnaround strategy at the company's Minneapolis headquarters, Vemana highlighted the significant journey that lies ahead, which he believes necessitates the expertise of his entire global team. "Now is the perfect time for AI to emerge, as we have a clear need for it," Vemana stated, emphasizing Target's growth ambitions. The company employs tech personnel not only in Minnesota but also in major states like New York, California, and Georgia, along with a global capability center in Bangalore, India. Despite making some workforce reductions at its headquarters and regional teams to prioritize store staffing, Vemana is clear that Target does not plan to follow the trend of downsizing tech teams in favor of AI solutions. He described the systems in place as efficient and capable of aligning work with the right resources, fostering a culture of innovation throughout the organization. Vemana pointed out that AI's impact extends deeply into Target's operations, particularly in enhancing the mobile app—an essential component of the retailer's business. The app has undergone a substantial transformation, rapidly evolving to integrate new features and functionalities crucial for AI-driven shopping experiences. "We have completely revamped the app in just 18 months, a task that traditionally would have taken years," he remarked. As CEO Michael Fiddelke focuses on key priorities such as reclaiming merchandising authority and transforming the shopping experience, Vemana reiterated that robust support from technology and AI is vital to achieving these goals within the desired timeframe. "With AI, we can accelerate our pace, take bolder steps, and effectively navigate our roadmap at an unprecedented speed," he concluded.
