In a transformative effort, the Tamil Nadu government has rolled out a pioneering initiative aimed at incorporating artificial intelligence, robotics, coding, and digital tools into the curriculum of government schools. Named the Tamil Nadu Schools Programme for AI, Robotics and Knowledge of Online Tools (TN SPARK), this program targets students in Classes 6 to 9 and is set to commence this academic year. The primary objective of TN SPARK is to close the technological gap between private and government educational institutions, ensuring that all children, irrespective of their socio-economic status, acquire essential skills that will shape the workforce of the future. During the initial phase of this program, 85 government schools in Coimbatore district have been selected—comprising 78 middle schools, four high schools, and three higher secondary schools. Approximately 880 state-of-the-art lab computers are being utilized to facilitate the training sessions. Classes will be scheduled for one to two periods each week, with the complete syllabus expected to be implemented by October, following the quarterly examinations. Bilingual textbooks in Tamil and English have been specially created for this program, and trained mathematics and science educators are guiding the students through their learning journeys. The curriculum integrates fundamental computer science concepts with engaging digital tools and AI applications. This includes: - **Computer Science Basics**: Covering algorithms, flowcharts, word processing, and data visualization. - **AI Applications**: Featuring text-to-image generation, digital art, doodling, translation, animation, and text-to-speech capabilities. - **Coding Skills**: Utilizing platforms such as Scratch, Blockly, and Turtle Art, alongside foundational HTML and cyber safety practices. - **Interactive Learning**: Offering online resources that span subjects like science, geography, anatomy, and languages. Teachers have noted a remarkable enthusiasm among students, who often express a preference for TN SPARK classes over conventional lessons. The program effectively leverages high-tech labs to nurture problem-solving abilities and enhance digital literacy. Officials emphasize that this initiative is not only about familiarizing students with advanced technology but also about equipping them for future academic and professional opportunities in an increasingly digitized world.
