As China looms, Taiwan makes more drones for defense and the US military

In a bid to fortify its defense against potential threats from China, Taiwan is intensifying its efforts to produce military drones. Recognizing the critical role that these unmanned aircraft play in ensuring its sovereignty, the Taiwanese government is ramping up domestic manufacturing and training programs for drone pilots. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense has put forth an ambitious budget proposal, amounting to $6.6 billion over the next six years, aimed at acquiring homegrown drones. This initiative includes plans to secure over 208,000 coastal attack drones, more than 1,400 coastal reconnaissance drones, and 1,320 uncrewed surface vessels by 2031. Currently, Taiwan's military arsenal features approximately 5,000 drones, a mix of US-made and locally produced models. Recent military exercises saw Taiwanese forces employing Altius-600 loitering munitions, developed by Anduril Industries, to hit offshore targets. Additionally, Taiwan’s Marines successfully utilized domestically manufactured drones to engage maritime targets, showcasing the growing capabilities of their drone technology. Moreover, this push for increased drone production is not only vital for national security but also serves as a catalyst for Taiwan's drone industry. Companies like Thunder Tiger are actively marketing their drone technologies to the US military and European clients, positioning them as viable alternatives to Chinese-made drones. Taiwan's export figures underscore this trend, with $115 million in fully assembled drone sales recorded between January and March 2026, surpassing the entire $93 million in drone exports for 2025, according to Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai. As Taiwan seeks to enhance its military capabilities, the intersection of defense and technological innovation promises to yield significant advancements for the island nation.
