Kamath flags issues of digital onboarding for rural users on fintech platforms

Nithin Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, has raised critical concerns regarding the digital onboarding process on fintech platforms, especially as it affects rural users in India. While he acknowledges that fintech innovations have significantly contributed to financial inclusion, he emphasizes that challenges still persist, particularly in remote areas. In a recent post on the social media platform X, Kamath stated, "The entire Indian financial services sector, including Zerodha, has greatly benefited from the convenience of digital onboarding through Aadhaar e-Sign and eKYC. This advancement has played a crucial role in increasing financial access in Tier 2 and 3 cities and rural regions, where many individuals had previously not engaged with the formal financial system." Kamath also pointed out the limitations faced by users in rural settings. Reflecting on his experiences in Bengaluru, he expressed surprise at the challenges related to OTP verification and biometric systems. He noted, "While digitization has helped minimize fraud and inefficiencies, no technological solution is perfect. For instance, SEBI mandates that brokers provide services through multiple channels, not just a single app interface." He further elaborated on the issues with biometric devices, stating that they often fail to operate as intended, even in ideal conditions. The problem is compounded in rural areas where mobile connectivity is unreliable, leading to delays in verification processes and the distribution of benefits. Kamath remarked, "These technological systems tend to disproportionately affect the economically vulnerable." Kamath stressed the importance of understanding the trade-offs of technology in rural India, where even minor disruptions can have significant impacts on daily life and financial inclusion efforts. He advocates for the development of user-centered technologies that embrace a 'graceful degradation' approach to mitigate these challenges, particularly in public services designed for citizens. The response to Kamath's insights has been largely positive on social media, with many users echoing his concerns. One user remarked, "Digital onboarding has expanded access, but the reality for rural users involves unreliable networks and failed biometrics, pushing people back into long queues. We need to prioritize offline alternatives and local support." Another commented, "Acknowledging the gaps in digital onboarding is essential to making it truly impactful for rural communities." Overall, Kamath's call for a more inclusive and considerate approach to fintech technology has resonated with many, highlighting the ongoing need for improvements in digital financial services across India.
