Pain management startup Sword Health expands into mental health, raises $40 million

Sword Health, a pioneering startup dedicated to alleviating pain through digital solutions, is making significant strides by venturing into mental health services. The company, which has been operational for a decade, recently announced the launch of Mind, an innovative program that integrates artificial intelligence, specialized hardware, and licensed mental health professionals to assist individuals grappling with mild depression and anxiety. Unlike traditional mental health services that often require infrequent and lengthy appointments, Sword's Mind aims to provide users with immediate access to care. Virgílio Bento, the CEO of Sword Health, emphasized the transformative nature of this approach during an interview with CNBC, stating, "It's really a breakthrough in terms of how we address mental health, and this is only possible because we have AI." On the same day of the announcement, Sword Health revealed it had successfully raised $40 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst, elevating the company’s valuation to $4 billion. This new influx of capital will be instrumental in supporting Sword's growth strategy, which includes acquiring other companies and expanding its AI capabilities globally. The funding round also saw participation from notable investors such as Khosla Ventures and Comcast Ventures. By September, Sword had raised over $450 million, as reported by PitchBook. This funding comes at a time when the digital health sector is showing signs of recovery following a challenging period post-Covid, marked by rising inflation and a shift back to in-person services. Notably, companies like Omada Health and Hinge Health have recently made their public debuts, indicating a renewed interest in virtual health solutions. Headquartered in New York but originally founded in Portugal, Sword Health offers various digital therapies that enable patients to manage pain from home, steering clear of more invasive treatments like opioids and surgeries. To enhance the Mind experience, users will receive a wrist wearable called the "M-band," which tracks various physiological and environmental metrics, including heart rate and sleep patterns. The Mind program also features access to an AI Care agent alongside human therapists, ensuring that human oversight remains a crucial component of patient care. For instance, if a user experiences an anxiety attack, the AI can suggest a clinician approve physical activities that may aid in their recovery. Bento highlighted the necessity of immediate support for mental health, stating, "You have an anxiety issue today, and the way you're going to manage is to talk about it one week from now? That just doesn't work." As interest in Mind grows, some clients are already on a waiting list to access this innovative service, which has been positively received in preliminary tests with design partners. Bento expressed confidence in the future of mental health delivery, claiming, "We believe that it is really the future of how mental health is going to be delivered in the future, by us and by other companies. AI plays a very important role, but the use of AI needs to be used in a very smart way."
