A growing number of users are making the shift from ChatGPT to Claude, particularly in light of recent controversies involving ChatGPT and its parent company, OpenAI. The pivotal moment came when Anthropic, the developer of Claude, took a stand against the Department of Defense by refusing to permit the use of its AI models for mass domestic surveillance or autonomous weaponry. In response to this stance, President Trump instructed federal agencies to cease utilizing Anthropic’s products, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated plans to classify the company as a supply-chain risk. Shortly thereafter, OpenAI announced its own partnership with the Pentagon, promising safeguards that have since ignited a significant debate regarding privacy and ethical AI usage. As a consequence, Claude has rapidly climbed the free app charts in the US App Store, surpassing ChatGPT. Anthropic reports a remarkable increase in daily signups, with over a 60% rise in free users since January and a doubling of paid subscribers this year. For many, the recent controversies have made Claude an appealing alternative to ChatGPT. If you're contemplating this switch, you need not lose your digital history. Transferring your data from ChatGPT to Claude is a straightforward process. Start by navigating to Settings in ChatGPT, then to Personalization, and locate the Memory section. From there, select “Manage” to review your stored information, ensuring everything accurately reflects your current preferences. Once updated, you can either manually copy the content you wish to keep or export your entire chat history by going to Settings, selecting Data Controls, and choosing “Export Data.” This process will compile your chat records into text or JSON files and send them to your email, although it may take some time if your history is extensive. Alternatively, you can take a manual approach by extracting key conversations or asking ChatGPT to summarize your main preferences and frequently discussed topics. After gathering your data, transitioning to Claude is simple. Open the app, navigate to Settings, then Capabilities, and ensure Memory is activated (note that this feature requires a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan). Initiate a new conversation and prompt Claude with, “Here’s some important context I’d like you to remember,” followed by pasting your information or summaries. For exported files, it’s best to prompt Claude to summarize your key preferences rather than pasting raw logs. Finally, confirm with Claude that your information has been accurately saved, and remember that you can always modify your preferences as they evolve. To completely sever ties with ChatGPT, simply canceling your subscription won’t delete your data; be sure to follow the necessary steps to remove your information entirely.
