School shooting survivor sues AI gun detection firm after system failed to spot weapon

A teenager who survived a tragic shooting at a Nashville high school in January 2025 has launched a lawsuit against the firm behind an AI gun detection system that failed to identify the weapon used in the incident, which resulted in two fatalities, including that of the shooter. The lawsuit, filed last month in Davidson County, accuses Omnilert, the security company responsible for the system, of being aware or should have been aware of significant limitations in its technology. These limitations, the lawsuit claims, could lead to failures in detecting weapons during critical emergencies, citing factors such as camera positioning, the distance of the weapon from the camera sensors, lighting conditions, and overall visibility of the firearm. Ara Bagdasarian, co-founder of Omnilert, has not responded to requests for comments regarding the lawsuit. Similarly, System Integrations, another party involved in the case that resold the Omnilert system, has also remained silent on the matter. In 2023, the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) Board approved a contract exceeding $1 million to enhance its security infrastructure with an AI detection layer across its network of cameras. Following the shooting, MNPS spokesperson Sean Braisted noted that the shooter’s position relative to the cameras contributed to the system’s failure to provide an accurate reading, preventing the alarm from being activated. The lawsuit references marketing materials from Omnilert's website, archived just prior to the shooting, which allegedly exaggerated the system's effectiveness. The company claimed that its AI-driven visual gun detection could have potentially prevented the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School by enabling earlier threat identification, a comparison that highlights the gravity of their claims. Notably, the marketing did not address issues such as false alarms or detection limitations, raising questions about the reliability of the technology, as articulated by Chris Smith, one of the attorneys representing the plaintiff.
