Racist comments targeting politicians tripled since Meta relaxed its rules

In a dramatic shift, Meta has revamped its content moderation policies, claiming to have over-policed speech on its platforms. This change, initiated last year, was aimed at promoting a more open political discourse. Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, articulated the company's intent to reduce censorship, stating that too many users faced frustrating enforcement actions for trivial content. However, a recent study from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has revealed alarming consequences of this policy overhaul. An analysis of approximately 8 million comments on Facebook has shown a staggering threefold increase in racist and abusive remarks directed at lawmakers from both the Republican and Democratic parties within just six months after the new rules were implemented. The report highlights even more concerning trends, noting that certain categories of hate speech, including violent threats, experienced a fourfold increase during the same timeframe. Specific instances of gendered and racially charged abuse were reported against lawmakers like US Representatives Jasmine Crockette from Texas and Byron Daniels from Florida, with Meta failing to take action against these comments. Additionally, threats against former President Trump saw more than a twofold increase in the months following the policy changes, with some comments containing direct threats to his life, which could be classified as felony offenses according to the researchers. The CCDH study focused on 100 members of the House of Representatives, selecting the 50 Republicans and 50 Democrats with the largest followings on Facebook, and analyzed comments on their posts both before and after the policy modifications.
