Following Google's significant updates to its Search platform, DuckDuckGo has experienced a remarkable increase in usage, indicating that some users are actively seeking alternatives. The privacy-centric search engine reported a week-over-week growth in U.S. installs averaging 20.8% in the week following Google's announcements at its I/O conference on May 19. Notably, this growth reached a peak of 37.6% on May 26. In the iOS sector within the U.S., DuckDuckGo's installs surged by an average of 33% during the same timeframe, with a striking nearly 70% increase observed on May 25. Additionally, visits to DuckDuckGo's dedicated page for users wishing to disable AI features saw a 22.7% rise week-over-week. While the timing of this growth is significant, it remains uncertain if Google's changes directly triggered this increase. At the I/O event, Google announced a comprehensive redesign of its Search functionality, incorporating more AI capabilities into the core experience. This includes integrating AI Mode directly into the main search interface, allowing users to ask more complex questions and upload various media types. Google is also enhancing its Search with AI-generated suggestions and enabling follow-up conversations. DuckDuckGo's leadership has posited that this user migration may stem from resistance to Google's forced integration of AI. "Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out," stated DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg. "We want to be the platform that empowers users to choose how much AI they engage with." According to DuckDuckGo spokesperson Kamyl Bazbaz, such a drastic increase in usage is unprecedented in recent times. "There hasn't been a news event that created this kind of jump in a long time," Bazbaz remarked. However, it's important to note that this data is based solely on DuckDuckGo's internal analytics, and broader trends in search behavior are challenging to quantify.
