The App Store is booming again, and AI may be why

Contrary to predictions that artificial intelligence would spell the end for mobile applications, the app market is witnessing an unprecedented revival. Recent data from Appfigures reveals a remarkable 60% increase in global app launches during the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year, with an even more impressive 80% surge noted in Apple’s App Store. As April progresses, the figures continue to climb, showing a staggering 104% rise in app releases across both the App Store and Google Play, with iOS alone seeing an 89% improvement. Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Greg “Joz” Joswiak, humorously remarked in a recent interview that the speculations regarding the demise of the App Store in the age of AI “may have been greatly exaggerated.” This boom occurs despite concerns that AI chatbots might divert users away from traditional apps, a notion supported by industry leaders like Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, who is advocating for an AI-focused smartphone. Furthermore, innovations in computing, such as smart glasses and enhanced smartwatches, are being explored as potential successors to smartphones, as highlighted in a New York Times report. Interestingly, OpenAI is also venturing into hardware, collaborating with renowned Apple designer Jony Ive. However, a different perspective suggests that AI could simplify app development, paving the way for a renaissance of the App Store. This new wave of app creators, many of whom may lack technical skills, could be behind the surge in launches. Appfigures' analysis indicates that mobile games continue to dominate new app releases, but productivity apps have surged into the top five categories this year, alongside utilities, lifestyle, and health and fitness applications. The hypothesis is that AI tools like Claude Code or Replit are significantly contributing to this increase, making it easier for individuals to create their apps more efficiently. However, the influx of new apps has also led to some challenges for Apple, as evidenced by the recent removal of the rewards app Freecash for violating store rules after it had spent months in the top five charts. Additionally, Apple faced criticism for allowing a fraudulent cryptocurrency app to exploit users, resulting in a loss of $9.5 million. While these incidents highlight potential vulnerabilities, Apple maintains a rigorous vetting process, having removed over 17,000 apps for violations in 2024 alone. Despite these efforts, some analysts, including John Gruber, suggest that the App Store requires enhanced monitoring to combat the growing number of popular but potentially fraudulent apps.
