AI company Superpanel raises $5.3M seed to automate legal intake

Julien Emery, CEO and co-founder of Superpanel, has a deeply personal connection to the challenges faced in the legal system. As a Canadian, he encountered difficulties in accessing affordable legal assistance, which became even more poignant after his mother experienced a car accident. This inspired Emery to address the cumbersome legal intake process, which he describes as a daunting maze for clients filled with forms, phone calls, and often lost leads. Emery explained to TechCrunch that the intake phase, where law firms assess new clients, has traditionally been viewed as too intricate for automation. However, advancements in artificial intelligence have changed the landscape. After a stint at Hootsuite and founding a health insurance underwriting platform, Emery collaborated with AI expert Dingyu Zhang to establish Superpanel in 2024. The platform automates a significant portion of the legal intake work, managing client data collection and feedback. Superpanel functions as a digital assistant for plaintiff law firms, streamlining communication with clients through various channels, including phone calls, text messages, and emails. It guides clients in sharing their narratives and crucial documents while helping firms categorize cases based on type, jurisdiction, and required documentation. Emery noted that in cases of ambiguity, the system is programmed to escalate matters to a human team member. The company recently announced that it has raised $5.3 million in seed funding, co-led by Outlander VC and Field Ventures. Emery revealed that connections from his previous startup helped him secure investors for this round, which also included LOI Venture, Zenda Capital, 8-Bit Capital, and Behind Genius Ventures. The funding will be directed toward hiring and enhancing Superpanel's offerings for plaintiff law firms. As the legal sector increasingly embraces artificial intelligence, Superpanel finds itself in a competitive landscape alongside other players like Clio Grow and LegalClerk.ai. Emery believes that Superpanel's unique approach will help it make a significant impact, stating, "Consumers now seek immediate and self-service solutions, influenced by AI tools and their everyday online experiences. Superpanel continuously guides them throughout this journey."
