Superhuman acquires AI detection startup GPTZero

Superhuman has officially acquired GPTZero, an AI detection startup founded by Princeton graduate Edward Tian as part of his senior thesis project. The announcement was made on Tuesday, though the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed. GPTZero has rapidly gained traction, boasting over 19 million registered users and generating an impressive $30 million in annual recurring revenue, as shared by Tian with Business Insider. The startup achieved profitability in 2024, according to a report by TechCrunch. Tian, alongside co-founder and CTO Alex Cui, who have been friends since high school, secured a total of $13.5 million in funding. This includes a $3.5 million seed round led by Uncork Capital, followed by a $10 million Series A round in June 2024, which was spearheaded by Nikhil Basu Trivedi, a co-founder of Footwork, along with contributions from several notable investors such as Reach Capital and Jack Altman's Alt Capital. Superhuman, known for its email service, had previously integrated an AI detection tool into its platform. The acquisition of GPTZero, which focuses on helping users identify and mitigate AI-generated content, complements Superhuman's existing capabilities. The rationale behind the acquisition is simple: Superhuman believes that having two AI detection tools offers a stronger defense against unreliable AI output.
