In a significant move within the tech industry, productivity platform Superhuman is set to acquire GPTZero, an AI detection startup co-founded by Edward Tian and Alex Cui in 2023. This acquisition comes at a time when AI-generated content is rapidly permeating the internet, raising the need for reliable detection tools. Tian, who created GPTZero during his senior year at Princeton, saw the platform gain widespread attention shortly after its launch. The tool has since been refined to include features that identify AI-generated content and detect hallucinations across social media platforms. Although the financial specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, PitchBook estimates GPTZero’s valuation at over $88 million. The startup has attracted investment from notable firms such as Uncork Capital, Neo, Footwork, and Jack Altman. Since its inception, GPTZero has experienced remarkable growth, boasting over 19 million registered users and generating an impressive $30 million in annual recurring revenue. Following the acquisition, both Tian and Cui will join Superhuman to lead a dedicated team focused on enhancing authenticity in digital content. Additionally, all 30 employees from GPTZero will transition to Superhuman. Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra emphasized the importance of the people behind GPTZero, stating, "When you're buying a business like this, the people come first." Formerly known as Grammarly, Superhuman has diversified its offerings, and the inclusion of GPTZero aims to bolster its existing authenticity tools, which already include an AI detector and an authorship verification product. The integration of GPTZero into Superhuman Go, an AI assistant that operates across various platforms, is on the horizon. However, GPTZero will continue to function independently as a stand-alone product. The ability to discern AI-generated content is becoming increasingly crucial, especially in fields such as education, consulting, recruiting, and journalism. Mehrotra noted that education constitutes about one-third of the annual revenue generated by Superhuman's flagship product, Grammarly. Tian articulated the mission of GPTZero: "GPTZero started with the mission of preserving what's human. Now we need to preserve critical thinking." This acquisition marks Superhuman's fourth significant purchase, following the acquisitions of productivity assistant Coda, the original Superhuman email app, and the AI spreadsheet tool Rows. Mehrotra's strategy is informed by his experience at Google, where he witnessed the evolution of a single product into a comprehensive suite, and he sees Superhuman's extensive user base as a catalyst for accelerated growth for newly acquired companies.
