In after-hours trading on Tuesday, shares of Super Micro Computer surged by 19% after the company released a robust financial outlook, despite reporting third-quarter revenue that fell short of market expectations. The server manufacturer revealed a remarkable 123% year-over-year revenue increase for the quarter ending March 31. However, the results did not fully meet analysts' projections provided by LSEG. Looking ahead, Super Micro's management has projected adjusted earnings per share between 65 to 69 cents for the fiscal fourth quarter, with anticipated revenues ranging from $11 billion to $12.5 billion. This forecast surpasses the LSEG consensus, which estimated earnings of 55 cents per share and revenue of $11.07 billion. The company is well-positioned within the burgeoning artificial intelligence sector, primarily due to its sales of servers equipped with Nvidia's powerful graphics processing units. Nonetheless, Super Micro has encountered significant challenges recently. In the same quarter, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York charged several individuals associated with an unnamed U.S. server company for allegedly diverting billions of dollars worth of Nvidia-powered servers to China. While Super Micro was not specifically named in the indictment, the company acknowledged that one of the accused was a co-founder and executive, while another was a managerial figure, alongside a contractor. CEO Charles Liang stated in March that Super Micro appears to have been misled by elaborate schemes of these individuals, which managed to deceive both federal authorities and the company’s internal compliance team. Wally Liaw, mentioned in the indictment, has since severed all ties with Super Micro and has exited the board. As of the latest market close, Super Micro’s stock is down approximately 5% year-to-date, compared to a 6% increase in the S&P 500 during the same timeframe. In the earnings report released on Tuesday, Liang highlighted the expansion of Super Micro’s manufacturing capabilities in Silicon Valley, emphasizing that the company is exceptionally well-prepared to cater to the soaring demand across diverse AI and enterprise sectors. Notably, the company announced plans for a new Bay Area facility that will span over 714,000 square feet, designed for manufacturing, design, testing, and service.
