Super Micro Computer's stock took a significant hit, plummeting nearly 10% in after-hours trading on Tuesday following the release of disappointing fiscal first-quarter results. The server manufacturer reported a 15% decrease in revenue, dropping from $5.94 billion a year prior. This decline was highlighted in a statement issued by the company. Just two weeks earlier, Super Micro had provided a preliminary earnings estimate, projecting quarterly revenue of around $5 billion, a stark reduction from its earlier forecast of $6 billion to $7 billion. Net income also suffered, plummeting to $168.3 million, or 26 cents per share, down from $424.3 million, or 67 cents per share, in the previous year. The company noted that certain expected revenues for the first quarter had been deferred to the second quarter due to “design win upgrades.” Super Micro anticipates sales between $10 billion and $11 billion for the current quarter, surpassing the $7.83 billion average forecast by analysts. Despite being a significant player in the artificial intelligence sector—thanks to its servers equipped with Nvidia graphics processing units—Super Micro's growth momentum seems to have stalled. After experiencing a surge in 2023, some analysts believe that competitors like Dell might be encroaching on its market share. Prior to the latest earnings announcement, the stock had seen a remarkable 55% increase for the year.
