Suno snaps up WavTool for its AI music editing tools amid ongoing dispute with music labels

In a bold move to enhance its music editing capabilities, Suno, an artificial intelligence music firm embroiled in legal disputes with music labels, has officially acquired WavTool, a cutting-edge browser-based digital audio workstation (DAW). This acquisition, announced on Thursday, is designed to bolster the tools available to songwriters and producers navigating the evolving landscape of music creation. Launched in 2023, WavTool provides musicians with a suite of innovative features, including stem separation, AI-driven audio generation, and an intelligent music assistant. Suno plans to seamlessly integrate WavTool's advanced technology into its newly launched editing interface, which debuted earlier this month. While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, a spokesperson for Suno revealed that a significant portion of WavTool’s team has transitioned to join Suno's product and engineering departments. This acquisition announcement comes at a time when Suno faces renewed scrutiny, as country artist Tony Justice and his label, 5th Wheel Records, have recently filed a lawsuit accusing the company of employing copyrighted sound recordings to train its AI music generator. This legal issue echoes earlier lawsuits from major music labels, including Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment, all alleging copyright infringement against Suno. Reports suggest that the prominent music labels are currently engaged in licensing negotiations with the company. The timing of the WavTool acquisition announcement appears strategically aligned to possibly mitigate investor concerns amid ongoing legal turbulence. By showcasing its commitment to innovation and growth, Suno aims to reassure stakeholders following a substantial $125 million funding round secured in May. The browser-based DAW is set to go offline in November, marking a significant transition as Suno integrates its new capabilities into its platform.
