A year ago, everyone said Google lost the AI race. Sundar Pichai now responds

In a candid discussion with YouTuber Lex Fridman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai addressed the turmoil within the company over the past year, when it faced significant scrutiny for falling behind competitors like OpenAI in the artificial intelligence arena. Despite the criticism and calls for his resignation, Pichai emphasized that Google has made a robust recovery with the introduction of its Gemini 2.5 models and new AI functionalities across various applications, including an impending AI chat mode for Google Search. Pichai explained that his leadership strategy has always been to prioritize an AI-centered approach, aiming to responsibly develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) while ensuring the release of products that genuinely benefit users. Reflecting on the challenging times, he stated, "I had a clear understanding of our internal developments, having made pivotal decisions to unify teams like Brain and DeepMind into Google DeepMind." He metaphorically compared managing Google to coaching a top-tier football club like Barcelona or Real Madrid, noting that every organization experiences rough patches. "I have learned to tune out the noise and focus on what truly matters. While external feedback can be valuable, it's crucial to distinguish between useful insights and distractions," Pichai emphasized. Looking ahead, Pichai expressed optimism about Google's future, stating that the next two decades present unprecedented opportunities for the company. He believes Google is well-positioned to capitalize on these prospects, asserting that the potential for innovation and growth is greater than ever before.
