Google's Sundar Pichai says AI could do his job one day

In a recent interview with the BBC, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, expressed his belief that artificial intelligence could eventually take on the role of CEO. He stated, "I think what a CEO does is maybe one of the easier things for an AI to do one day." Pichai highlighted the rapid advancements in AI technology, suggesting that we may soon see AI systems that can operate more autonomously as agents representing users. He further elaborated on the anticipated evolution of AI over the next year, stating, "You will see the evolution being that they can do more complex tasks for you." His perspective aligns with that of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, who recently remarked that AI could outperform him in leading the company, expressing optimism about such a future. While Pichai acknowledged the potential for AI to positively impact society by generating new opportunities and enabling individuals to concentrate on more meaningful tasks, he also recognized the need for adaptation among the workforce. "It has potential for extraordinary benefits, and we will have to work through societal disruptions," he noted. The job market is already feeling the effects of AI, with a study by Indeed indicating that roles such as software engineers and product managers are among those most affected by automation. Nonetheless, Pichai is confident that AI will also generate new job opportunities. He emphasized the importance of societal readiness for these changes, saying, "It will create new opportunities, and people will need to adapt." For the younger generation, Pichai offered advice on navigating a world increasingly influenced by AI. He encouraged them to embrace the technology and learn to integrate it into their professional lives, asserting that adaptability will be key to success across various fields, whether in education, medicine, or beyond. "The people who will excel are those who learn to use these tools effectively," he concluded.
